Ice cream concept from FroYo founder is opening in Olivette
Dohmo will serve customizable ice cream in flavors like matcha and ube
A new ice cream shop is coming soon to Olivette. Located at 9538 Olive Blvd., Dohmo will offer ice cream made in a number of flavors and ingredient combinations. The shop, which is slated to launch next weekend, will offer ice cream that is made to order for each customer, according to their preferences, due in part to special machines that mix ingredients right into the ice cream base. The concept is the latest project by Jason Jan who also owns Nami Ramen and previously launched and operated several FroYo shops in St. Louis.
“Our ice cream will be made right in front of customers, and unlike traditional machines it allows you to blend the flavors and toppings on the spot,” said Jan of the process.
He further explained that each ice cream starts with base flavors of either vanilla or chocolate and guests can choose their mix-ins from a number of items like candies, chocolates, cereals, fruits, cheesecake bites or cookie dough. There are even options to make ice cream in unique flavors like ube, yuzu and matcha.
“It has a special, very fine texture to it that’s similar to soft-serve,” he said of the ice cream.
There will also be 12 specialty cups, which are selections the Dohmo team have found pair well together and have given those menu items memorable names. For instance, The Goat pairs the vanilla ice cream base with cheesecake bites, lemon cookie bites and graham cracker crumbs, and The Aloha combines vanilla ice cream with pineapple, roasted coconut flakes and bananas.
In addition to offering up the ice cream in cups, there’s also an option to serve it out of a freshly made waffle cone, or guests can choose to have their selection made into a milkshake.
Other menu offerings include Japanese taiyaki-style waffles that are made in a fish shape and filled with sweet or savory items. The establishment will also serve crafted drinks such as a variety of boba and fruit teas, plus sparkling drinks made with fruit and milk teas.
Jan said he tapped local firm SPACE Architects + Designers to deliver an interior design that’s modern and minimal, with an open kitchen concept so that guests can see how everything is made. Since the 1,300-square-foot space is situated in an endcap unit in a new shopping center, there’s lots of windows to let in natural light, as well as room for a patio, which will feature seating for about 16.
The dining area inside will seat another 30 to 40 customers and, in addition to the parking spaces at the shopping plaza, Jan said he’s arranged for some additional spaces to be available at Olivette Lanes nearby.
And in keeping with the building’s modern and minimal design, customers will be able to view both the menu and product photos on a large flat screen monitor located near the order counter, as well as having the option of placing their order through self-serve kiosks.
