Grand Spirits Bottle Shop is rebranding to Monstera: Mezcaleria & Natural Wines

A beloved neighborhood fixture is evolving, as Grand Spirits Bottle Shop at 3194 S. Grand Blvd. officially rebrands into Monstera: Mezcaleria & Natural Wines, set to launch on Oct. 21. Owner Michael Fricker, a well-known figure in the city's bar scene with popular spots like New Society and Grand Spirits, is leading this evolution as a showcase for his enduring passion for Mexican agave spirits and natural wines.

Originally opened as a cozy neighborhood wine shop, Grand Spirits Bottle Shop has been gradually reshaping itself over the years, with mezcal becoming a central element of its offerings. The rebranding into Monstera formalizes this transition, transforming the space into a vibrant mezcaleria and natural wine destination. The business was recently named one of the top 10 mezcalerias in the U.S. by PUNCH, cementing its place as a premier destination for lovers of Mexican spirits and wines.

“We originally opened Grand Spirits as a small neighborhood wine bottle shop,” said Fricker in a statement. “However, with my extensive background in agave spirits and countless hours spent in Oaxaca over the last decade, the bar naturally evolved. Over time, mezcal became a core element of what we do, alongside our love for natural wines. The new name, Monstera, better reflects this focus.”

Monstera draws its name from the Monstera deliciosa, a plant native to Mexico's lush, tropical forests. Monstera deliciosa carries a history of secrets and discovery, evoking the untamed spirit of the Mexican jungles where it thrives. With its large, striking leaves and mysterious nature, this plant has long been revered for its beauty and symbolic depth across cultures. This blend of mystery and allure perfectly mirrors the vibrant, hidden world that Monstera: Mezcaleria & Natural Wines invites guests to explore. The rebranding emphasizes an environment of edgy fun, with a tagline that promises “mischief not malice.”

The space will continue to operate as a cocktail bar and bottle shop, specializing in traditional agave-based spirits such as mezcal, tequila and other Mexican spirits. Alongside these will be a curated selection of international natural wines, carefully chosen to reflect the terroir and heritage behind each bottle. Monstera is committed to featuring small-batch, producer-driven projects that honor the cultural roots and craftsmanship behind agave spirits, offering patrons a truly authentic experience. With its new direction, Monstera aims to become a premier destination in St. Louis for anyone looking to explore the world of mezcal and natural wines, blending craft, culture and a sense of good-natured mischief.

To mark the rebrand, Monstera will host a grand re-opening event on Oct. 21 from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Guests can look forward to an electric atmosphere with delicious food pop-ups, expertly crafted cocktails and exclusive mezcal tastings that showcase Monstera’s dedication to terroir-driven agave spirits.
