Porano by Gerard Craft's Niche Food Group: a first look at the new space in Des Peres

The fast-casual Italian-American concept from James Beard-winner Gerard Craft’s Niche Food Group has officially re-opened

Porano's highly anticipated re-opening day is finally here. The fast-casual Italian-American concept from James Beard-winner Gerard Craft’s Niche Food Group has officially opened its doors at 13323 Manchester Road in Des Peres. Joining the team is Chief Operating Officer Ryan Hux, a 15-year restaurant veteran whose career includes acclaimed national fast-casual brands Shake Shack and Raising Cane’s.

Measuring at 3,200 square feet and seating 64 guests, the new location is around 25 percent smaller than the original Porano in downtown St. Louis, which closed in 2018. The space, designed by Nick Adams of Mademan Design, feels open and airy with bright white walls, light wood furniture and whimsical art. The large mural features Italian landmarks superimposed on top of notable St. Louis buildings, hearkening back to the vibe of the original location. At the back of the dining room, guests can take a spin on the foosball table. Porano's branding and to-go bags feature playful designs created by Atomicdust.

Customers step up to the counter and order from a selection of signature pastas, grain bowls, salads and Detroit-style pizzas on slick, digital kiosks. True heads will be delighted to know their familiar favorites remain largely unchanged, like the the Suzie Salad made with mixed greens, farro, pesto, red wine vinaigrette, 1/2 spicy tofu, 1/2 seasonal veggies, green olives, bread crumbs, crispy garlic, and spicy honey. You still have the option to build your own bowl: start with house-made semolina pasta, farro, romaine and kale lettuce or Italian rice, then add one of 11 house-made sauces including everything from a classic pomodoro to pumpkin seed pesto. Online ordering and pickup are available. Catering options, from boxed meals to buffet-style dining, will be offered soon.

For dessert, diners can snag one of Porano’s gelato pops. Standard flavors include chocolate, vanilla, and salted caramel with rotating seasonal specials. In addition to soft drinks, house-made lemonades, beer, wine, non-alcoholic cocktails, and boozy slushies will also be available. Expect to see a frozen take on an Aperol spritz alongside rotating specials like frosé.

Porano is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. 10 percent of opening day proceeds will be donated to the Midwestern Braille Volunteers, a Kirkwood-based non-profit organization with 60 years in business transcribing printed materials into braille for the visually impaired.
