The dog days of St. Louis summer are undeniably here. It’s only Monday and we’re already planning our next happy hour. Reach for one of these chilly treats next time the heat advisory strikes. 

Don’t Call Me Shirley at Platypus
The cocktails rotate frequently – sometimes daily – at this hotspot in the Grove, but thankfully the frozen machines move at a slightly more leisurely pace. The most recent boozy slushie du jour is a take on a Dirty Shirley with vodka, pomegranate, açai and grapefruit.

Frozen Guava Margarita at Yellowbelly
Luckily for us, one of St. Louis’ finest cocktail bars knows their way around a frozen machine. Yellowbelly keeps a rotating roster and our current favorite is the guava margarita with reposado and blanco tequilas, stunningly pink guava, hibiscus and lime.

Orange Dreamsicle at Narwhal’s Crafted
The entirety of Narwhal’s menu has us in a chokehold all season long, but for maximum summer nostalgia, we reach for the Orange Dreamsicle. Spiced rum, whipped cream vodka, triple sec and housemade orange sherbet topped with vodka-infused whipped cream makes for the perfect grown-up treat.

Jungle Juice at Tropical Liqueurs
Nothing is as essential to a Missouri college experience as Tropical Liqueurs. With locations in Columbia and Springfield, in addition to the Grove outpost, those whopping 44-ounce styrofoam cups have signaled the start of many iconic nights out. Our go-to is the Jungle Juice, with 190 proof grain alcohol (yeah, they’re not messing around), mango puree, mai tai mix, pineapple juice and coconut. Pro tip: add a beer floater for $1 – the fizzy lager topper mellows out the intense juicy sweetness and softens the icy texture.
