Mauki’s Bakery & Country Store offers breakfast all day in Soulard

What started as a side gig selling produce from her front yard and led to a booth at the Soulard Farmers Market has turned into a full-force restaurant for local business owner Angie Swyers. Mauki’s Bakery & Country Store is now open at 1730 S. Eighth St., as reported by St. Louis Magazine.

The new storefront (Mauki is a combination of two of her cats’ names) offers plenty of fresh baked goods, ranging from foccacia and oatmeal bread to pies, doughnuts, cookies and cakes. It also serves huge portions of country-style breakfast and lunch. Some fan favorites include the bacon cheeseburger and biscuits and gravy. “People are liking that we serve breakfast all day long until we run out,” Sywer said.

Swyer makes most of her ingredients fresh and uses her homegrown produce in items like the house-made salsa. “We have a 5,000-square-foot greenhouse, so we grow our peppers and tomatoes and use all those in our salsas,” she said. “We smoke the peppers in order to get that smoky taste – we don’t use liquid smoke.”

She has been selling produce collected from her own farm at the Soulard Farmers Market since 2016, although much of what is available in her booth now includes jams, jellies and more baked goods.

When her former career as a longtime customer service manager at Cardinal Health ended due to outsourcing and the opportunity to open her own store arose, she took it. “I said, ‘Well, now is the time to either open up my bakery or find a new job.’ So, I said, ‘This is it; we're gonna do it,’” Swyer said.

The bakery has only been open just under a month, but it’s already seeing immense backing from the Soulard community. “The community out here has been 100% supportive, and I couldn't ask for a better location,” she said.

Mauki’s is open 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, and offers online ordering and takout, as well as limited inside seating.
