First Look: Perennial on Lockwood in Webster Groves
From new iterations of The Parkmoor Drive-In and Olive + Oak to last year’s Layla and Balkan Treat Box, Webster Groves has recently become a veritable promised land for second locations of beloved local eateries. As of earlier this month, a collaboration between Perennial Artisan Ales and Olive + Oak has officially joined the roster. Perennial on Lockwood is now open for patio service at 216 W. Lockwood Ave.
The dark, wood-leaden brewpub and its sunlit secondary drinking space reside in the former Auto Beauty Specialists building between Olive + Oak’s new iteration, which opened July 1, and an Olive + Oak event space. The brewery’s Lockwood location is helmed by Perennial veterans, including co-owner Emily Wymore and head brewer Chris Kinast, while Evan Buchholz serves as executive chef.
Front and center, of course, is the beer. The bar’s 15 taps will offer a variety of novel Perennial brews, including about 10 brewed on-site, when the brewery itself gets up and running next month. Crowlers (32-ounce cans) are available of any of the beers. Some of the bar’s current offerings include Vacation Dad dry-hopped summer ale, Prism saison, Hurry on Daylight hazy IPA and Ollie Ollie Oxen Free session IPA.
Wine options are available, and Kinast said he’s working on a cocktail program that may involved batched cocktails from Olive + Oak. Those who want access to Olive + Oak’s larger cocktail list can simply walk through a door that separates the two spaces.
A menu of hearty bar food includes tallow fries, a cheese plate, a ham board and onion soup as appetizers, while salads include a mixed green and a Bibb wedge. Sandwiches include a grilled cheese with onion-thyme jam, beer-battered fish and a breaded pork tenderloin. The ultra-Instagram-worthy crispy chicken thigh sandwich comes atop a massive seeded bun, bathed in Sichuan peppercorn and dressed with chili aioli.
Current hours are 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday with to-go beer pickups 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
