Good Fortune will reconcept in 2019

Editor's Note: Good Fortune has closed.

Good Fortune will change its concept in 2019 and head in a simpler direction, according to co-owner Cory Smale.

The new incarnation of the Chinese-American restaurant will debut Friday, Jan. 4 at 5 p.m. featuring a more affordable and approachable menu of “bites, baos and bowls.”

“I think it has to get back to where it started,” Smale said of the eatery, which opened in April at 1641D Tower Grove Ave., in Botanical Heights. “A more casual, comfortable concept.”

The bites portion of the menu will encompass items like Rangoons, ribs and chicken wings. The selection of baos will include char siu pork belly and kung pao fried chicken, while bowls will feature versions like beef and broccoli and cashew chicken.

Smale said the food menu will top out at $10, and the bar will have $10 cocktails and $5 canned beers on hand, as well. Takeout will be available via GrubHub, UberEats and Postmates

The restaurant will finish up the year with a series of eight-course seated dinners, dubbed Finding Fortune on Thursday Dec. 27, Friday, Dec. 28 and Saturday, Dec. 29, featuring some of executive chef Ryan McDonald’s favorite ingredients and techniques.

McDonald will step away from day-to-day kitchen operations in order to spend more time with his family, though he will continue to help with recipe development. Smale said MacDonald will bring on additional kitchen staff to help execute the new menu.

Good Fortune’s new hours will be Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday from 5 to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 5 to 11 p.m. Smale said lunch service will return once the new concept is solidified.
